Children’s Feet

Children’s feet grow and change rapidly, and early assessment can help ensure healthy development. At JC Podiatry, we provide expert guidance on what’s normal, what to monitor, and when treatment may be needed. Our goal is to support your child’s mobility, comfort, and confidence as they grow.

Children’s Foot Health and Development

Understanding Children’s Foot Development

Children’s feet are constantly evolving – from their first steps through to adolescence. During this time, it’s common for parents to notice changes in walking patterns, foot shape, or posture. While many of these changes are part of normal development, some may indicate underlying issues that benefit from early intervention.

At JC Podiatry, we specialise in assessing and managing foot and lower limb concerns in children across Palmerston North, the wider Manawatū, and the Tararua region. Our warm, professional approach ensures your child feels comfortable and supported throughout their visit.

Common Concerns We See

We regularly assess and manage a range of paediatric foot conditions, including:

  • Calcaneal Apophysitis (Sever’s Disease)
A common cause of heel pain in active children, especially during growth spurts. It often affects those involved in running or jumping sports.
  • Pigeon Toe (In-toeing)
When a child’s feet turn inward while walking. This can be due to hip, leg, or foot alignment and may resolve naturally – but in some cases, monitoring or treatment is helpful.
  • Curly Toes
A condition where one or more toes curl under the foot. It’s often present from birth and may improve with age, but persistent cases can benefit from podiatric advice.
  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease
A knee condition affecting growing adolescents, particularly those involved in sport. It causes pain and swelling just below the kneecap and may be linked to foot biomechanics.
  • Symptomatic Paediatric Flat Foot
While flat feet are common in young children, persistent or painful flat feet may require assessment. We evaluate whether orthotics, footwear advice, or exercises are appropriate.

What to Expect at a Children’s Foot Assessment

Our consultations are designed to be informative and reassuring. We’ll take a detailed history, observe your child’s walking and standing posture, and assess joint mobility and muscle function. We’ll explain what’s typical for your child’s age and when (or if) treatment is recommended.

In many cases, reassurance and monitoring are all that’s needed. However, if intervention is appropriate, we may suggest:

  • Custom or prefabricated orthotics
  • Footwear recommendations
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Activity modification or load management
  • Referral to other health professionals if needed

Why Early Assessment Matters

Identifying potential issues early can help prevent discomfort, improve movement patterns, and support your child’s overall development. Even if no treatment is required, a professional assessment offers peace of mind and guidance for the future.
