Radial Shockwave Therapy

Home  /

Radial Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues. These sound waves are delivered through a handheld device applied to the skin over the injured area.

What is Radial Shockwave Therapy?

Think of it as a way of “Rebooting” the body’s natural repair systems, improving blood flow, breaking down scar tissue, and encouraging cell regeneration to stimulate a repair response and help improve your function.

What is Involved in a Session?

  • Assessment: Your podiatrist will first assess your injury to confirm if shockwave therapy is suitable
  • Treatment: A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the skin, and the handheld device delivers pulses of energy to the affected area.
  • Duration: Sessions typically last 10-20 minutes, depending on the condition & area being treated.
  • Frequency: Most treatment plans involve 3–6 sessions, spaced 7-10 days apart.
  • After Treatment: Mild discomfort, redness, or tingling is normal but usually settles quickly. You can return to daily activities straight after.

The procedure is safe and does not require anaesthetic or surgery, meaning you can often return to daily activity soon after.

Who Can Benefit from Shockwave Therapy?

RSWT is effective for a wide range of chronic and stubborn injuries, particularly where healing responses have reduced. Common conditions treated include:

  • Plantar fasciitis & heel pain
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Shin splints
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
  • Stubborn muscle trigger points (E.g. calf muscles)

Benefits of Radial Shockwave Therapy

  • Non-invasive: No injections or surgery required
  • Quick: Treatments take less than 10 minutes
  • Fast-acting: Pain relief often starts after 1–2 sessions
  • Effective for chronic pain: Helps when other treatments haven’t worked
  • Supports natural healing: Improves circulation and tissue repair

Who Should NOT Use Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is safe for most people, however, there are some exceptions. You may not be suitable if you:

  • Have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device
  • Are pregnant
  • Have a bleeding disorder or are on strong blood-thinning medication
  • Have had a recent corticosteroid injection in the same area
  • Have a malignant tumour or active infection at the treatment site

Your podiatrist will screen for these before starting treatment.

Getting Assessed & Starting Treatment

Before starting shockwave therapy, you will have a comprehensive podiatry assessment. This ensures the treatment is appropriate for your condition and helps us create the best management plan for you.
