Onychocryptosis, commonly known as an ingrown toenail, occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. The most common cause is incorrect cutting techniques, however, can be caused by injury, repetitive stress and genetic factors. To help this, we can perform a minor procedure, called a partial nail avulsion or total nail avulsion.

A partial nail avulsion (PNA) is a minor surgical procedure involving the use of local anaesthetic to help remove the small fragment of nail causing the problem. A chemical agent can be applied to the nail matrix (root of the nail bed) to prevent the small fragment of nail from growing back and causing problems. This is safe and effective minor procedure, with the procedure itself taking about 15-20minutes.  An effective treatment option which can create immediate relief and help get you back to performing at your best.

In more severe cases, your podiatrist may recommend a total nail avulsion. A total nail avulsion involves the same process as a PNA, however, with the complete removal of the nail. A chemical agent can be applied to nail matrix, although isn’t always required. Again, another safe and effective minor procedure to help you perform at your best.
